Anarchy vs SMP — what's actually different?
Both call themselves "survival multiplayer". Both hand you a fresh world and a wooden pickaxe. Then they diverge into opposite games — and joining the wrong one wastes weeks. This page defines both honestly, compares them line by line, and tells you plainly who should not join a server like ours.
Two species,
one label
SMP — survival, multiplayer, refereed
An SMP (survival multiplayer) server is survival Minecraft with a social contract enforced by staff. There are rules pages, admins, and consequences: land-claim plugins protect your builds, griefers get banned and grief gets rolled back, hacks are detected and punished. Many SMPs run economies (shops, currency, player trades), host events, and wipe the map for "seasons" or big version jumps. The upside is safety and community; the cost is that someone else's judgement is always above yours.
Anarchy — survival with witnesses instead of referees
An anarchy server deletes the referee. No rules in-game, no admins, no protected land, no bans — hacks and exploits included, griefing legal, scamming legal. Nothing is rolled back and, on serious anarchy servers, the world is never reset: 2b2t has carried the same map since 2010, and eternel.eu — founded 2026, zero resets — makes the same promise. Whatever survives, survives because you hid it well or defended it. The upside is total freedom and stakes no SMP can offer; the cost is everything else on this page.
Line by line
| Typical SMP | Anarchy (e.g. eternel.eu) | |
|---|---|---|
| Claims & land protection | Yes — claim plugins, protected regions | None. Distance, obsidian and secrecy are the only walls |
| Griefing | Bannable; grief is rolled back | Legal. Expected. Nothing is ever rolled back |
| Admins & bans | Active staff, rules pages, appeals | No staff in the world. Nobody to appeal to |
| Resets | Seasonal wipes and fresh maps are common | Never. The map IS the history book |
| Economy | Shops, currency plugins, safe trades | Barter at your own risk — scams are part of the economy |
"Typical SMP" describes the common pattern, not every server — plenty of SMPs never wipe, and staff quality varies wildly. The anarchy column is not a caricature; it is the product working as designed.
"No rules SMP"
is just anarchy
Search for "no rules SMP" or "SMP without claims" and you'll find servers selling the thrill of anarchy under a cosier name. Apply one test: if nobody enforces anything — no grief rollbacks, no bans, no protected land — that server is an anarchy server, whatever its tag says. The label doesn't change what happens to your base.
The reverse matters more. A server that advertises "no rules!" but still bans hacking, or X-ray, or slurs, or "excessive" griefing, has rules — it's a moderated SMP with griefing switched on, and there's an admin whose mood decides your appeal. That can be a great game. It just isn't anarchy, and you deserve to know which contract you're signing before you sink a month into a base.
We keep our own version of the fine print short. The world has no laws. The website does: hate speech is masked in the site's chat displays, and content reports are honoured. That split — unmoderated world, accountable website — is the whole constitution, and it's published on the anarchy page.
Who should NOT
join anarchy
Recruitment pages never say this part out loud, so we will. Stay on an SMP if any of these is you:
- You build to keep. Megabases live longest where claims protect them. Here, anything found gets burned — veterans call a destroyed base a chapter, not an ending, and mean it.
- Chat toxicity ruins your session. In-game chat is unmoderated; slurs exist here. Our website masks them in its displays, but the game itself will not protect you.
- You're a younger player, or you're looking for a family-friendly server. Anarchy is an adult-tempered environment. That's not a wink — it's a warning.
- Losing inventory makes you quit. You will be killed by hackers with gear you can't see coming. Everyone is. It stops being unfair once you accept it's the weather.
- You want community events, shops and a safe spawn town. Those are SMP features, and good SMPs do them brilliantly. Our spawn is a crater with a camera pointed at it.
None of that is failure — it's fit. If the list above describes you, a well-run SMP will genuinely make you happier, and we'd rather lose you at this paragraph than after your first base burns.
But if you read the list and felt your pulse go up — anarchy is the only place that feeling lives. Watch the wasteland on CCTV for five minutes, and if it pulls at you, spawn in from this browser with any account.
